Some Suggestions on the Selection of Raw Materials for Adhesives

(1)Meeting process requirements: It is essential to ensure the proper content or purity of the raw materials—ideally selecting industrial-grade products—to facilitate smooth polymerization and curing. Excessive impurities or moisture content can adversely affect the product's performance.

(2)Consider the source of raw materials, as their origins affect adhesive performance. For instance, while both are cyclohexanes, the product of petroleum cracking contains straight-chain hydrocarbons and lacks sufficient purity, whereas cyclohexane produced via benzene hydrogenation boasts high purity. Petroleum-derived toluene and coal-tar-derived toluene show no difference in performance specifications, yet the former has a much milder odor. Similarly, regarding light magnesium oxide, samples of equal mass can vary drastically in volume and activity—some exhibiting high values and others the opposite. If low-activity light magnesium oxide is used for pre-reaction with the resin, it is likely to cause phase separation or sedimentation in the resulting chloroprene adhesive. Even when using formaldehyde solutions from different manufacturers to produce "107 glue" under identical conditions, the resulting viscosities can vary significantly.

(3) Pay attention to shelf life. Chemical raw materials generally have a limited shelf life; properties can change over prolonged storage, with olefinic monomers and rubbers containing unsaturated bonds being particularly sensitive. It is best to use freshly produced raw materials to avoid issues. Exercise caution when using materials nearing or past their expiration date; conduct small-scale tests first to determine their suitability.

(4) Ensure appropriate pricing. While prioritizing quality, select the most cost-effective raw materials; do not simply assume that higher-priced materials are inherently better.
