Applications of Various Types of Adhesives in the Electronics Industry
In the electronics industry, the application of adhesives extends beyond mechanical fastening to include requirements for thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and electrical insulation, as well as the ability to facilitate impact-resistant assembly, sealing, and substrate protection. The properties required for these diverse applications vary widely, with service lives ranging from a few seconds to several years and usage quantities spanning from less than a microgram to over one tonne.
I. Applications of Various Types of Adhesives in the Electronics Industry.
1. Epoxy adhesives: These are the most widely used adhesives in the electronics industry due to their versatility, excellent bonding capabilities, broad adaptability, ease of use, superior electrical properties, and resistance to aging.
2. Silicone adhesives: These are suitable for applications requiring flexibility, a wide temperature range, high-frequency performance, high-temperature resistance, and resistance to atmospheric pollution.
3. Hot-melt adhesives: These are suitable for applications requiring rapid assembly, where lower bond strength and moderate operating temperatures are acceptable.
4. Acrylate adhesives: These are selected primarily for their excellent electrical properties, stability, good aging resistance, transparency, and rapid curing capabilities.
5. Polyurethane adhesives: These remain flexible, tough, and secure across a temperature range extending from low temperatures up to 121°C.
6. Pre-coated polyvinyl butyral (PVB): This forms joints that are both tough and easy to assemble.
II. Applications of Adhesives in Electronic Equipment
Adhesives are utilized in virtually all types of electronic equipment; examples include the bonding of composite materials for radar antennas—where they provide thermal and electrical conductivity essential for component operation—and the bonding of nose cone rings for missiles. Other typical applications include:
(1) Antenna reflectors for tracking/illumination radars in shipborne air defense systems;
(2) Bonding external dielectric windows to the substrate in the U.S. Cobra Dane phased-array radar system;
(3) Bonding various electronic components within the guidance computers of Trident Mk missiles using thermally conductive adhesive films;
(4) Bonding cured epoxy laminates to metal frameworks in air traffic control radar systems.
